How are words counted?
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers and abbreviations each count as one word.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on the average adult silent reading speed of approximately 200 words per minute. A 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes to read.
How many words is one page?
A standard double-spaced page with 12-point Times New Roman font contains approximately 250 words. A single-spaced page contains about 500 words. So a 5-page essay is roughly 1,250 to 2,500 words.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters with spaces counts every character including spaces between words. Characters without spaces counts only letters, numbers, and punctuation, excluding all whitespace. Some platforms like Twitter count characters with spaces.
Does it count words in different languages?
Yes. The word counter works with any language that uses spaces to separate words, including English, Spanish, French, German, and many others. For languages like Chinese and Japanese that do not use spaces, character count is more relevant than word count.
